Filling in the Gaps: Characterizing the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone

Paragorgia is a genus of soft coral that can grow to heights of up to six meters (20 feet). Nicknamed “bubblegum coral” for their brightly colored and bulbous polyps, paragorgia can often be found in habitats with other deep-sea species, including deep-sea starfish and crinoids, also known as sea lilies and feather stars, pictured here.

Soft corals, like this cluster photographed here, are found around the world, especially in and around the waters of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS). OCNMS is a biologically diverse and ecologically rich region that encompasses nearly 8,250-square-kilometers (3,200 square miles) of coastal and ocean habitats along the wild, remote and scenic Olympic Coast of Washington State.

Corals are often referred to as apartment complexes because they provide valuable shelter to a number of different species, including this squat lobster found perched on top of a section of large branching Primnoidae.

A deep-water coral garden composed of Acanthogorgia sp. sea fans and mushroom corals (Heteropolypus sp.) was identified on the flanks of San Juan Seamount at 880 meters (~2,624 feet).
