Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs) from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) describe ways that scientists and engineers organize their thinking. While the CCCs are present across all areas of science and in other subjects as well, explicitly describing them and using them to support science learning can be challenging. This routine will help your students build confidence and grow in sophistication in their use and development of the CCCs.

There are seven CCCs.  They are:

  • Patterns
  • Cause and Effect
  • Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
  • Systems and System Models
  • Energy and Matter
  • Structure and Function
  • Stability and Change
