Classifying Deep Sea Creatures with Dichotomous Key

Various creatures from Dichotomous Key
Credit
Ocean Exploration Trust

Using photographs and descriptions of mysterious deep-sea organisms, like those seen by the team aboard the E/V Nautilus, students will examine physical characteristics and use a dichotomous key to classify each organism. As they work through the key, they will practice making scientific observations, comparing written evidence, and using logical decision-making just as marine researchers do during real ocean exploration expeditions.

By the end of their exploration, they’ll understand that classification is more than memorizing names. It is a process that helps scientists organize biodiversity, communicate discoveries, and better understand the incredible life found in Earth's largest and least explored ecosystem.

Objectives & learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Use a dichotomous key to accurately identify deep-sea organisms.
  • Describe observable characteristics used in biological classification.
  • Compare similarities and differences among diverse marine organisms
