Local explorers join deep-sea exploration team in RMI
The team on Ocean Exploration Trustβs π/π ππ’πΆπ΅πͺππΆπ΄ recently launched a 21-day expedition to explore deep-sea habitats throughout the Republic of the Marshall Islands, in collaboration with the Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority (MIMRA) and funded by NOAA Ocean Exploration via the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute.
This expedition provides unique opportunities for young professionals in the fields of research, management, and traditional knowledge to work alongside multidisciplinary professionals and develop at-sea skills. One such opportunity is the inclusion of Marshallese and locally based professionals to join the expedition aboard Nautilus as the team explores RMI waters. Nominated by the MIMRA, three local representatives are joining the expedition as science team members. Congratulations to Meriana Poznanski, Hovel Dako, and Brendan Keoni Kattil as they join the Corps of Exploration and contribute to the deep-sea research efforts.
All three are currently sailing aboard E/V Nautilus as part of the expedition team and to bring the excitement of exploration to audiences on the island and worldwide. The expedition will provide publicly accessible data about deep water areas of the country, including the National Marine Sanctuary of Bikar and Bokak. All of the activities are being streamed live, connecting learners with local scientists, educators, and students. All data gathered will be provided to the RMI government and MIMRA to support and enable follow-on exploration and management activities to better understand and care for the ocean.
