Mesopelagic Critters of Papahānaumokuākea
This photo album was created by Science Communication Fellow Gina Errico.
During NA182, we had the honor of traversing unexplored areas of the deep sea in Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary. Despite technical issues, avoiding storms, and changing plans, the mesopelagic zone of the ocean provided us with the ability to view the unique and colorful fauna that call the sanctuary home. Papahanuamokuakea Marine National Sanctuary is comprised of a series of islets and unique geological formations northwest of the main Hawaiian Islands. The following photos came from our dive between 200 and 600 meters deep.
Deep-Sea Habitats of the Hawaiian Archipelago
Our final OECI-sponsored expedition of 2026 brings E/V Nautilus back to the Hawaiian Islands. While nearshore waters surrounding the islands have been relatively well surveyed, many offshore areas remain completely unexplored, hindering efforts to effectively manage the resources of this unique region.
