Update from an Expert: Eruption in the Marianas Revealed
During our NA171 expedition in the Marianas, E/V Nautilus mapped over NW Rota-1 Seamount, a single line of data en route to port. After comparing the latest data with those from 2014, geologists were shocked to find evidence of dramatic changes caused by volcanic activity and seamount growth. In this video, OET Media and Outreach Coordinator Jamie Zaccaria interviews geological experts Dr. William Chadwick and Dr. Jeffrey Beeson from Oregon State University about their new paper and this surprising new chapter in the volcanic history of the Mariana Archipelago.
Mattingan: Mariana Arc Volcanic Exploration
E/V Nautilus will begin the 2025 season exploring the ocean of the Mariana Islands- one of the most tectonically and volcanically dynamic locations on the planet. This area is home to one of the most active arc volcanic systems on Earth with more than 60 submarine volcanoes, and a back-arc spreading center where new seafloor is created.
