From Space to Sea: A Conversation with an Astronaut
During our NA175 expedition mapping the waters of the Central Pacific, the team aboard E/V Nautilus had the privilege of connecting with NASA Astronaut (and Corps of Exploration member herself!) Zena Cardman on the International Space Station. Coordinated by Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program via a HAM radio, two teams of explorers got to chat about the value of exploration and working in truly remote environments. Because the International Space Station orbits overhead at more than 17,000 mph, the window for radio contact is quick. So jump into this rapid-fire interview to learn more about Zena’s time exploring both space and the deep sea!

Seafloor Mapping Offshore Howland & Baker Islands
During this expedition, E/V Nautilus explores the waters offshore Howland & Baker Islands. Located roughly midway between Hawaiʻi and New Zealand in the Central Pacific Ocean, the islands of Howland and Baker are some of the most isolated land masses on Earth.
