Optical Effects of Flange Pool at Grotto Hydrothermal Vent

During our H2032 dive at the Main Endeavour Vent Field with Ocean Networks Canada, our Corps of Exploration came across these stunning flange pools near the Grotto hydrothermal vents. The reflecting effect of these shallow pools witnessed underneath volcanic chimney ledges (aka flanges) is created when hot, buoyant hydrothermal fluids interface with cooler surrounding seawater. Look closely to see the shimmering of vent fluids flow outwards and up over the edge!
