Nā Kūkulu a Davida Malo
Using the book Moʻolelo O Hawaiʻi written by David Malo as inspiration, this powerpoint combines images captured on E/V Nautilus and terms from Malo's book to showcase various spaces known to the Hawaiian people. The teaching resource showcases open ocean views including different horizons, the zenith, where the sun rises and sets as well as the names of different cloud formations. These images include various stars and constellations used in traditional Polynesian navigation and wayfinding, plus changes in the stars witnessed during a seafloor mapping transit from Hawaiʻi to American Samoa while crossing the equator.
David Malo was one of the first historians in Hawaiʻi who learn to write at Lahainaluna School and record many histories. Writing in the Hawaiian language in the 1830s, Malo captured many stories of his elders from earlier eras.
