Tim Joyce

Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I have a focus on software architecture and building systems that communicate with many parts. Some of my work involves writing control code for robotic vehicles, GUI development, sensors drivers, and getting efficient data from operations. I work with a very efficient team of all kinds of skilled researchers, scientists, and engineers within WHOI NDSF.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

In undergrad, I took a few specialized courses relating to artificial intelligence and robotics, learning fundamentals of sensor perception and mapping. Living near cape cod, the ocean was a large part of life growing up, so i was intrigued to combine the fields of software and robotics.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

Seeing the advancement in technology and wanting to be a part of it is a constantly changing thing.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

Traveling all over.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

Part time work often included meeting new influential people that swayed myself into this career path.

Reading, Cooking, instruments

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

For those looking to get into marine robotics, learn as much as you can, and immersion and mentorship are important.
