Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?
I design, build, operate and maintain deep-sea remotely operated vehicles for scientific research. As an electrical engineer doing this for 9 years, I have a passion for giving the science community better tools to conduct research in the harsh environment of the ocean depths.
What sparked your initial interest in your career?
I was drawn to electrical engineering from a young age starting with remote control cars, I was curious how they worked and would take them apart and put them back together.
Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
My high school science teacher inspired me to explore, ask questions and kindred my curiosity.
What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?
We have much to learn from our planet and every ROV dive we learn just a little be more. I am most fascinated by how animals have adapted to thrive in the harsh environment of the bottom of the ocean.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
Before ocean science robotics I work on the rail road, in a steel mill, and in automotive manufacturing. Those experiences gave me skills that I still use today, for example both rail road equipment and ROV's use hydraulic systems, and production manufacturing lines use robotic arms, similar to robotic arms on ROV's.
What are your degrees and certifications?
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering - Michigan Technological University 2014
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include, ADV biking, snowmobiling, snowboarding, mountain biking and jet skiing, and recently scuba diving.
What advice would you give someone who wants a career like yours?
If you want to be an ROV pilot I suggest applying to internships, this will get you a taste of the work to see if you like it, and most importantly you will meet people and build your network.
