Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I am an oceanographer for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) whose mission is to manage development of U.S. Outer Continental Shelf energy and mineral resources in an environmentally and economically responsible way. At BOEM, I work on incorporating scientific research into environmental analyses to support decision-making. I also serve as a subject matter expert on benthic ecology, particularly in deep-sea habitats.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I was privileged to grow up and attend school a few miles from the ocean, so it has always been a constant in my life. As I learned more about the ocean (and still continue to do so), it opened up this whole new world of interesting animals and processes. Then, I happened to end up in a deep-sea lab for graduate school and have stuck with it ever since. There is so much to explore and learn about the deep sea, especially as human activities move further offshore.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

It definitely takes a village, but I will take this opportunity to give a shoutout to my Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Lisa Levin, who has provided invaluable guidance and support over the years.

How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program?

I first sailed on the E/V Nautilus as a graduate student on an expedition exploring the California continental margin in 2015. And I am lucky enough to have found my way back many years later.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

During my graduate studies, I became very interested in the application of scientific research in support of decision-making. So, after finishing my degree, I completed a Sea Grant John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship with NOAA Ocean Exploration, for which I then served as an Associated Scientist through the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. In 2021, I had the opportunity to begin my career in public service with BOEM, where I continue to learn every day.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Ph.D. Oceanography with a Specialization in Interdisciplinary Environmental Research, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego; M.S. Oceanography, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego; B.S. Environmental Systems, University of California San Diego; B.A. Economics, University of California San Diego

What are your hobbies?

I am an avid baker and have recently picked up sewing. So I have been spending a lot of time at the thrift store, finding bedsheets to turn into clothes.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Be authentic to yourself, your interests, and other people. I often think I "should" do this or I "should" do that, but what has always served me best is reflecting on who I am and what I find fulfilling.

"I am excited about working on Nautilus because there is so much we don't know about the deep sea and anything is possible!"
