Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

I'm an undergraduate senior at Oregon State University, and because I don't attend classes on campus, I've done all my work online, using virtual labs and software like ArcGIS. While I've learned a ton this way, I'm beyond excited, as this is my first chance to dive into hands-on research! I can't wait to apply what I've learned in the real world and discover which parts of environmental science truly ignite my passion.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I am a Pacific Islander, and the ocean has always been a huge part of my culture. It's a living entity, deeply connected to our spiritual traditions and vital to the sustenance of our community. To me, the ocean is a source of life, history, and identity. My early fascination with its mysteries sparked a passion for science, particularly for understanding and protecting the waters that surround me and the land that defines who I am. This deep connection inspired me to pursue environmental science, driving my commitment to becoming a steward of the environment. Whether on land or at sea, my goal is to explore and understand the forces that shape our environment, which have profoundly influenced my life.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

I've been blessed with a support system that extends beyond my family, mentors, and small community, making it impossible to single out just one person. My motivation and encouragement come from the strong women in my life and my village who have made a name for themselves in science and throughout Oceania. Their achievements inspire me every day to pursue my passion and carve out my own path in the field.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

What fascinates me the most about my work is studying how the environment adapts to the way we treat it. Through online school, I've conducted extensive research on climate change and coral bleaching, driven by my initial desire to major in marine science and become a marine biologist to help rehabilitate coral reefs. I'm continually amazed by how these ecosystems respond and strive to survive amidst human impact.

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I first heard about the OET through Oregon State's Ecampus Learning Community emails. Initially, I didn't feel qualified and passed over the email many times. But on the very last day of the application, I mustered up the courage to apply, knowing it was a long shot. It felt like a dream when I was accepted into the expedition team, and I am incredibly excited for what's to come.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

Throughout my college career, I worked full-time in a pharmacy. While it wasn't directly related to environmental or marine sciences, the experience taught me invaluable skills. I developed strong communication, management, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities, as well as a relentless determination to never give up. These skills have been instrumental in my journey and will continue to benefit me in my future endeavors.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Associates of Arts in Liberal Arts - Northern Marianas College, 2019
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences - Oregon State University, 2024
Certified Open Water Diver - PADI

What are your hobbies?

I love spending time outdoors whenever I can. My island offers many scenic routes that my friends and I enjoy exploring with our dogs. I also love meeting up with my paddle sisters to enjoy sunrise or sunset outrigger paddling sessions. Whether hanging out at the beach or going on hikes, being outside is always a joy for me. And, of course, I also enjoy binge-watching movies.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

You are capable of anything your mind can dream of, and you are worthy of every opportunity that comes your way. Believe in yourself, as the only one who can stop your dreams from coming true is you. As an indigenous daughter of the Pacific and an islander who never imagined making it this far, I know it's possible to achieve your dreams with open arms and an open heart. I've always believed in tapping into my highest self and letting it shine through, whether personally or in my career, and sometimes that's all it takes.

To my village and all the Pacific Islanders with dreams as vast as the Pacific Ocean, remember that who you are makes you unique. Embrace STEM fields and let your curiosity and determination guide you. Step out of your comfort zone, believe that your ancestors and your village will carry you, and sail into endless opportunities. Pursuing a path in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics can open doors to incredible possibilities and allow you to make meaningful contributions to our world. Let your passion for discovery and innovation drive you forward, knowing that you have the strength and support of your community behind you.

What excites me the most is exploring the underwater world, discovering new findings, building relationships with fellow explorers, and being part of an amazing team.
