Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do? / Parlez-nous de votre travail / vos recherches. Quels types de tâches effectuez-vous? 

With Fisheries and Oceans Canada, I work on various marine spatial planning projects such as designating marine protected areas and developing oil spill preparedness plans. I have worked with many different remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and have had the opportunity to dive down to the Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents in the human occupied vehicle (HOV) Alvin - what an amazing experience that was! I also scuba dive to monitor populations of fisheries species and species of conservation concern, such as northern abalone.

Au sein de Pêches et Océans Canada, je travaille sur divers projets de planification spatiale marine, comme la désignation des zones de protection marine et l’élaboration de plans de préparation aux déversements de pétrole. J’ai travaillé avec de nombreux modèles de véhicules sous-marins téléguidés (VTG) et j’ai eu la possibilité de plonger jusqu’aux évents hydrothermaux Endeavour dans le véhicule habité Alvin. Une expérience incroyable! Je fais aussi de la plongée pour surveiller les populations d’espèces visées par les pêches et d’espèces dont la conservation est préoccupante, comme l’ormeau nordique.

What sparked your initial interest in your career? / Qu'est-ce qui a initialement suscité votre intérêt dans votre domaine professionnel?

I started out wanting to be a veterinarian for marine mammals after becoming fascinated with them during trips to the local aquarium. In university, I took biology and ecology courses as part of my program and really enjoyed learning about all of the different components of an ecosystem and how they work together. I decided to become a marine biologist/ecologist so that I could continue studying interesting animals and how they interact with each other and their environment.  

Au départ, je voulais devenir vétérinaire et m’occuper des mammifères marins étant donné que j’étais devenue fascinée par eux lorsque nous allions à l’aquarium de la région. Dans le cadre de mon programme universitaire, j’ai suivi des cours de biologie et d’écologie; j’ai beaucoup aimé apprendre sur toutes les différentes composantes d’un écosystème et sur la façon dont elles travaillent de concert. Comme je voulais continuer d'étudier des animaux qui m’intéressaient et savoir comment ils interagissaient entre eux et avec l’environnement, j’ai décidé de devenir biologiste et écologue marin.  

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most? / Qui vous a influencé ou encouragé le plus?

I would have to say that my grandfather influenced me the most. Growing up, I was his fishing buddy and spent countless hours on the water talking his ear off about everything to do with fishing and all of the wildlife we would see while we were out there. He definitely instilled a love for being out in nature and on the water in particular.

Je dirais que mon grand-père est celui qui m’a le plus influencée. Pendant mon enfance, j’étais son partenaire de pêche et je passais avec lui d’innombrables heures sur l’eau à parler de tout ce qui avait un lien avec la pêche et de toute la faune que nous apercevions. Il m’a définitivement instillé un amour de la nature et, particulièrement, de l’eau.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating? / Quel élément de votre travail ou de vos études est le plus fascinant selon vous?

By far the most fascinating experience I have had so far was visiting the Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents at 2.2 km depth in the human occupied vehicle Alvin. It was surreal to look out the portal and come face to face with the tubeworm that I had been studying and see it in its natural environment. Another highlight of the dive was watching all of the bioluminescent jellyfish and other animals light up in response to flashing lights from Alvin. It felt like the ocean was talking back to us! More recently, I had the opportunity to scuba dive along the west coast of Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii in British Columbia Canada to monitor northern abalone populations. It was quite the adventure climbing from the ship into the dive boats every morning and heading out to our dive sites for the day. The diving was beautiful in the kelp forests off Vancouver Island and in the crystal clear waters of Haida Gwaii!!

L’expérience la plus fascinante que j’ai vécue jusqu’à maintenant est, de loin, ma visite des évents hydrothermaux Endeavour à une profondeur de 2,2 km dans le véhicule habité Alvin. C’était irréel de regarder le portail et d’être face à face avec le ver tubicole que j’étudiais, de le voir dans son milieu naturel. Un autre point saillant de cette plongée fut d’observer les scyphozoaires et autres animaux bioluminescents s’allumer en réaction aux lumières clignotantes de l’Alvin. J’avais l’impression que l’océan nous répondait! Plus récemment, j’ai eu l’occasion de faire de la plongée en scaphandre le long de la côte ouest de l’île de Vancouver et à Haida Gwaii en Colombie-Britannique au Canada afin de surveiller les populations d’ormeau nordique. C’était toute une aventure d’embarquer dans les bateaux de plongée à partir du navire avant de nous rendre sur notre emplacement de plongée pour la journée. La plongée était magnifique dans les forêts de varech près de l’île de Vancouver et dans les eaux cristallines de Haida Gwaii!

What other jobs led you to your current career? / Quels autres emplois vous ont amenés à votre carrière actuelle? 

Along the path to my current career I was a lab instructor and lab coordinator for various biology and ecology courses, I sorted and identified zooplankton samples, I collected intertidal invertebrates and shipped them around the world for genetics work and educational purposes, I helped maintain saltwater aquaria in schools around Victoria, B.C., and I helped maintain the invertebrates collection at the Royal BC Museum. All of these jobs helped me to develop the skills that I use in my current career.

Avant d’en arriver à ma carrière actuelle, j’ai été instructeur et coordonnateur de laboratoire pour divers cours de biologie et d’écologie, j’ai trié et identifié des échantillons de zooplancton, récolté des invertébrés intertidaux que j’envoyais aux quatre coins du globe à des fins éducatives ou pour des travaux génétiques, et j’ai aidé à entretenir des aquariums d’eau salée dans des écoles de la région de Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique et à entretenir la collection d’invertébrés du Royal BC Museum. Tous ces emplois m’ont permis de développer les aptitudes que j’utilise dans ma carrière actuelle.

What are your hobbies? / Quels sont vos passe-temps?

In my spare time, I love kickboxing, scuba diving, and riding motorcycles.

Pendant mon temps libre, j'adore faire du kickboxing, de la plongée sous-marine et de la moto.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours? / Quel conseil donneriez-vous à quelqu’un qui souhaite faire la même carrière que vous?

I would highly recommend marine field station courses. They give you an idea of what marine biology/ecology field work is like, they are a lot of fun, and the connections you make during these courses will last into your future career. Also, develop a diverse skill set so that you can take advantage of many different types of opportunities.   

Je recommanderais vivement les cours dans une station marine. Cela permet de voir en quoi consiste le travail sur le terrain en biologie et écologie marines. C’est très amusant, et les liens que l’on tisse pendant ces cours perdurent au fil de la carrière. Il faut aussi développer des compétences variées afin de pouvoir profiter de différentes occasions.   

How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program? How did you get on the ship? / Comment vous êtes-vous impliqué dans le Nautilus Exploration Program? Comment êtes-vous monté à bord du bateau?

I have been involved in the deep-sea ecology program with Fisheries and Oceans since 2015 and was invited by the program lead to participate in the seamounts portion of this expedition. I am really looking forward to joining the Nautilus team on this exciting exploration!  

Je suis impliqué dans le programme Écologie des grands fonds de Pêches et Océans Canada depuis 2015 et le chef de projet m’a invité à participer au volet monts sous-marins de cette expédition. J’ai vraiment hâte de me joindre à l’équipe Nautilus pour participer à cette formidable exploration!
