Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I design, build and operate equipment for oceanographers who study the deep ocean. I have worked on tethered robotic systems, maned submersibles, autonomous systems and cabled observatories. These systems allow scientists to gather data in some of the deepest and hardest to reach regions of the ocean.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I started as a high school science teacher but I found that I really like building things. This position allows me to continue working in an academic setting with scientists studying really interesting places and I get to build the unique equipment they need.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My grandfather was also an engineer and worked on interesting projects when I was young. I always wanted to be like him.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

Fascinating is not a word I would ever use. For me, what drives me and keeps me going is the personal reward I get from this work. The ability to work with a group of scientists who want to study an area that is really hard to get to and work through the design process, build the vehicle, send it deep into the ocean and get meaningful data that informs our understanding of the ocean is incredibly rewarding for me.

How did you get involved with the Ocean Exploration Trust?

I am the project engineer for the Hadal Profiler. OET and the chief scientists of this project have partnered in the initial testing and now research using the Hadal Profiler. I am happy to be along for the ride.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I started as a high school science teacher then went back to school to study engineering. Then I worked for a mechanical contractor building civil projects before I got involved with the University of Hawaii.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Science in Oceanography - Humboldt St. University, Masters of Science in Ocean and Resources Engineering- University of Hawaii

What are your hobbies?

I love going sideways :) Surfing, Snowboarding, and Hydrofoiling. I will take an occasional hike or mountain bike ride too.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

You need to know a little about everything, from electronics to materials to seamanship. Take advantage of internships and volunteer opportunities. Be as helpful to as many people as you can and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
