Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

I am a middle school science teacher. I also taught pre-k students. The work I've enjoyed doing the most has been getting young minds interested in STEM. I like to focus my teaching on finding new and exciting ways to incorporate science into any subject that I am teaching.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

My love for the outdoors was what initially sparked my interest in my current career. I was fascinated with how beautiful our world is & wanted to learn more. In college I started doing internships, got to travel & that continued to cultivate my interest and spark over the years.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My father has been my greatest influence. He has taught me that with hard work anything is possible. It does not matter where you come from or how much money you have, you can always make your dreams come true. I've blessed with a wonderful husband who is my number 1 fan. He always pushes me to achieve my goals and believes in me even when I don't.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

The most fascinating part of my work has been watching students who come from low income communities like myself find a love & passion for science.

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I had the privilege of participating in the first ever STEMSEAS expedition in 2016. Since then I have sailed abroad the Joides Resolution with the JR Academy & stayed in touch with program coordinators who led me to this opportunity.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I’ve been blessed to have many opportunities during my time as an undergraduate student. I have taught multiple science camps for elementary school students. I’ve also sailed with STEMSEAS and JR ACADEMY during my undergraduate career. And I’ve spoken in multiple conferences about our STEMSEAS program to encourage students to apply. After graduation I taught 6th grade science at a charter school in Louisiana.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies in Geology, Physical Science and Environmental Science — University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 2021

What are your hobbies?

I love cooking, writing poetry, painting, traveling & spending time with my family!

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

I would advise people to not give up on your dreams. Just because someone from your hometown hasn’t done it doesn’t mean you can’t! Reach out to people, keep learning and don’t ever stop dreaming!
