Thessaloniki Biology: Comb-Finned Squid - 2012 (Remastered!)
In honor of our 15th anniversary, we’re reminiscing on some of our favorite memories, like the wildlife spotted while exploring Thessaloniki Mud Volcano in the Mediterranean Sea. First up is the comb-finned squid (Chtenopteryx sicula), which may be the first video ever captured of this strange-looking squid in its natural habitat! Thought to be a deepwater species that makes late-night migrations to the surface, we saw this cryptic cephalopod gliding around 1,300m deep off the coast of southern Turkey. Like many cephalopods, this squid's arms flickered in sepia tones thanks to pigment-filled chromatophore cells.
