Meet Ocean Explorer Kainalu Steward

Corps of Exploration member Kainalu Steward is a PhD student in the Multi-Scale Environmental Graphical Analysis (MEGA) Lab at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. Kainalu sailed onboard E/V Nautilus as an Ocean Science Intern, Seafloor Mapping Intern, and Cultural Liaison. In this video, he shares his advice for those looking to follow in his footsteps.

As part of Ocean Exploration Trust’s ongoing efforts to build an equitable and ethical relationship with the Papahānaumokuākea Native Hawaiian Cultural Working Group to appropriately weave Hawaiian culture into deep sea exploration expeditions and connect with curious minds across Hawaiʻi and around the world, we’re featuring voices of featured Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiians) explorers who are part of our expedition team.
