Todd is interested in underwater vehicle design and the development of tooling for remotely operated vehicles. His education as a Naval Architect and Ocean Engineer has enabled an expertise in mechanical and structural design, hydrodynamics, buoyancy, and electronics packaging: key elements in the design of Dr. Ballard's vehicles. In 2002-2003, he was the principle mechanical designer of ROV Hercules, which he continues to refine for use as a remote tool for ocean exploration and archeological oceanography. During expeditions, Todd is an ROV Pilot, giving him the opportunity to "fly" his creations and interact with the scientists and students affiliated with Ocean Exploration Trust.
In addition to running his business, Gregory Designs LLC, Todd flies ROVs on a variety of ships including NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer and helps scientists and engineers design sampling systems.
