Talia (Rima) Browne
Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?
I work in the Knowledge Management Division at the Seabed Minerals Authority. My core role is data management, which includes supporting our work through GIS mapping and spatial analysis. I assist in reviewing technical and scientific information, and in communicating this effectively to a wide range of stakeholders. At times, I also participate at sea as an inspector on license holder programmes, helping to ensure compliance and oversight. More recently, I have been involved in supporting SBMA-led marine scientific research cruises, which are expanding our national data and knowledge base for informed decision-making.
What sparked your initial interest in your career?
What sparked my interest in seabed minerals was that it is a completely new area for the Cook Islands, with both huge potential benefits for the country and significant risks if not managed carefully. The opportunity to be part of this pioneering work—helping to shape how the sector develops responsibly from the very beginning—was what drew me in.
Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
I had some really great science teachers throughout primary and high school who sparked my curiosity and made learning fun. I’ve also always liked being organized and structured, and science felt like a natural and enjoyable way to use those strengths.
What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?
I find the combination of data and real-world application the most fascinating. Being able to work with GIS mapping and technical information, and then see how it informs decisions, helps protect our environment and manage resources responsibly. I also really enjoy the times I get to go out at sea, which brings a hands-on perspective to the work and shows the bigger picture beyond the data.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
No specific job led me directly to this career. It was more about being in the right place at the right time, and having a curiosity about what was happening in this new and developing space. That curiosity opened the door for me to step into the role and grow with it.
What are your degrees and certifications?
Bachelor of Science - University of Auckland 2017
What are your hobbies?
i love sports - rugby, football, netball. I also enjoy hiking and bake a mean sticky date cake.
