Simon Jones
Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?
I am an ROV Pilot/Technician with over 16 years experience. I started on 2007 after a 19 year career in the Royal Air Force as a mechanical technician. I worked for 13 years in the oil and gas industry doing subsea construction, inspection, maintenance and repair of subsea assets but my passion has always been in the world of science. Since completing my BSc in Physics and Geology as an adult in 2013 I have been looking to combine my skills and experience as an ROV pilot with my passion and knowledge of science. I got that chance in 2021 and have been working in the science community ever since.
What sparked your initial interest in your career?
I started out in ROV's as I was looking for the technical challenge of being multi-disciplinary as well as the piloting aspect. My scientific interest has always been there and now I am able to combine both my technical experience with my scientific interest and knowledge.
Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
I have worked with many inspirational people over the years.
What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?
To see hydrothermal vents for the first time was an amazing experience, one I'd looked forward to for many years and to be able to measure the temperatures first hand was just incredible. I have also had the the chance to see so many unimaginable species in the deep ocean, from ostracods to dumbo octopus, from salps to sharks.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
My career in the Royal Air Force.
What are your degrees and certifications?
I have a BSc (Open) from the Open University in the UK, my main areas of study were physics, geology and oceanography. I am IMCA Certified as an ROV Supervisor and have done many health and safety courses over the years in that role. I was a health and safety instructor in the Royal Air Force.
What are your hobbies?
I play guitar, enjoy photography and painting.
What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?
Be technically proficient, patient, and remember that anyone regardless of experience of background has something to bring to the table.
