Roger Chastain is currently a Staff Reseach Associate at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He has over 25 years experience isolating, culturing and studying the physiology of marine microorganisms, especially those collected in the severe environments of the deep sea. He also has technical expertise maintaining equipment that must be operated at hydrostatic pressures mimicking deep-sea conditions, and collecting deep-sea samples from trenches using autonomous landers.

Roger Chastain graduated from University of California, San Diego, in 1972 with a degree in biology, and received a masters degree in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
