Matthew Schaffer

Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I specialize in learning and being molded by the more experienced people aboard the ship to make me better in my field. This is my first experience on board and I am eager to learn as much as possible. 

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

My interests were first sparked as a little kid growing up on beaches and my father teaching me about wave patterns and how to spot where sand bars. I've since then been fascinated by the ocean and wanted to know more about all of its workings.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My Dad was my biggest encouraging figure. He always urged me to do something outside of my comfort zone and try new and challenging things.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

One of the most fascinating things about this field of work is realizing just how much I don't know about the ocean. Every day I get to discover more and more about this exotic and mysterious world.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I've had no other Jobs before this merely an interest and a dream to chase.

What are your degrees and certifications?

I have a Highschool Diploma from Leigh High School.

What are your hobbies?

I really enjoy creating, designing, and writing fictional worlds for Dungeons and Dragons. I also really enjoy working out and pushing my body and mind to their limits.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Never give up on your dreams. It's okay not to have a plan as long as you trust the process, keep with it, and keep your chin high you'll end up alright.
