Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

I'm a video editor specializing in science communication.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I've had a lifelong interest in the natural world--particularly ocean life. I vividly recall learning about the incredible discovery of the deep-sea vents on Public Television as a child. I pursued Fine Art and Filmmaking in higher education, and have sought opportunities to use my design and storytelling skills to contribute to the growing field of science communication.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

The people who have influenced me most are the science communicators who write about, film, and explain scientific discoveries in ways that make them accessible to people like me.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

It's always exciting to first see raw footage and figure out ways of sharing it with an audience.

How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program?

I was a fan of Nautilus Live videos long before a friend sent me their job posting to join Ocean Exploration Trust full-time!

What other jobs led you to your current career?

My first role in science communication was at a video science journal where I worked as a rough and finishing video editor. There, I was able to see the methodology various researchers used and learned to work directly with scientists to convey their results. Later, I continued this line of work at a major research university, conveying cutting-edge medical research to medical students and professionals.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Filmmaking - Massachusetts College of Art, 2003

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy painting, filmmaking, traveling, and gardening.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Begin to create! What knowledge do you have access to that you can communicate to others? Find a compelling way to visualize that information and share it with the world.
