Jim's career centers on the development and operation of ROVs in support of ocean science and exploration. He helped build the original Jason vehicle at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the '80s, was the project leader for development of the ROV Tiburon at MBARI in the 90's, and led development of IFE / OET's Hercules and Argus vehicles in the 00's. He was IFE's Chief Engineer until 2010. He now does consulting engineering for several clients, including NOAA, OET, WHOI, Hydroid and (last but not least) Ocean Networks Canada. Jim is also adjunct faculty in Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island, where he has taught a course on ROV Design and a Coast Guard licensed captain.

 Jim earned BS and MS degrees in Ocean Engineering from MIT.
