Jesus Gandar Ortega
Describe your work onboard the ship. What are your responsibilities?
I am the third engineer aboard the exploration vessel E/V Nautilus. I am responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the ship's machinery and engineering systems, including generators, pumps, propulsion support equipment, and auxiliary machinery. My goal is to help ensure that all engineering systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably throughout the voyage. I am proud to be part of a team dedicated to ocean exploration, scientific research, and the discovery of new knowledge about our ocean.
What part of your work do you like the most?
What I enjoy most about my job is being part of a multicultural crew. Working and living with colleagues from different nationalities allows me to learn about other cultures. Being at sea, supporting exploration missions, and collaborating with people from around the world makes this career very rewarding for me.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
Before becoming a third engineer, I gained experience through different positions in the maritime industry. I started by learning the fundamentals of ship operations and machinery maintenance, which helped me develop my technical skills and understanding of engineering systems.
What are your hobbies?
I really like being with my family, playing and watching baseball, riding a motorcycle, and going to the beach.
What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?
Do it! A maritime career is the best decision they can make. It is a very nice profession, and they should never give up.
What sparked your initial interest in a career working at sea?
What sparked my interest in a professional career at sea was my fascination with ships and marine engineering from a young age. I was always curious about how large vessels operate and how complex machinery works in such challenging environments.
