Communications
Education and Outreach Coordinator
NOAA Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary

Tell us about your work / research. What kinds of things do you do?

I develop and implement sanctuary education, outreach and communications plans that inspire ocean conservation using the concepts of Ocean Literacy. I conduct public outreach, teacher workshops, student field studies and tribal youth programs.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

As a boat captain, I was traveling to various areas and seeing conditions change over the years. A change seemed to be taking place really fast, and not for the better. I could see many changes first-hand, but also learned from local community members of changes to the quality and availability of their marine resources. Marine debris was covering the beaches and clogging fishing gear, corals were bleaching and fisheries were down. I felt that the changes that we generally hear over generations of time were happening in only a few years. It was at that time that I wanted to be involved in education and outreach to help conserve our ocean's valuable resources for future generations.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

The people I have interacted with over the years that live and depend on the ocean have been the greatest influence on me. I am also inspired by the incredible wildlife that lives in the sea.

What element of your work / study do you think is the most fascinating?

The most fascinating element of my work has been my experience at sea and seeing marine life in their natural environment. I am constantly in awe of the power and beauty contained in the ocean.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

Prior to my work with Olympic Coast, I was an outreach program coordinator for NOAA Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. I also crewed and skippered vessels in Key West, Florida for close to fourteen years, sailed the Atlantic Seaboard, completed a trans-Atlantic voyage, and logged over 16,000 nautical miles sailing the coastal waters of Venezuela and the Caribbean.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Marketing - University of Connecticut; 100 Gross Tons Master of Near Coastal License - United States Coast Guard

What are your hobbies?

I love to be in or on the ocean - surfing, sailing, snorkeling, and exploring! I also adore dogs.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Learn as much as you can about the ocean and get involved. Do whatever you can to get on the water and get hands on experience. If traveling, get to know the locals and always be respectful of different cultures.

How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program? How did you get on the ship?

I represent Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary as education lead.
