Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I graduated from Western Washington University with my Bachelor of Sciences in Marine and Coastal Sciences this spring and will begin research in geologic oceanography at the University of Rhode Island this fall. I plan on working with diverse datasets gathered on the cruise including geochemical and bathymetry data.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

My interest for research in geologic oceanography started during my undergraduate studies. This is when I went on a research vessel (RV Langseth) to the Queen Charlotte Fault Zone offshore British Columbia. During the expedition my mentor suggested that I could identify seep sites in water column data due to my budding interest in geochemistry. From there, I began studying, identifying, and researching seep sites covered by the ship's track. I analyzed the water column data repeatedly and identified multiple seep sites. After identification, I started reading articles and reviews on cold seeps. My fascination of them grew and I wanted to continue to do more research and learning at the graduate level. Overall, I hope to further my understanding of geologic oceanography through new topics and datasets.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My mentor, while very busy, made time for her undergraduates and motivated me to continue my research. After the research trip I continued working with several of the scientists from the research expedition to the Queen Charlotte Fault Zone. Along with my mentor, these individuals inspired me to continue my education and research.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

The most fascinating part of my work is using vendor software packages and combined with my own software to unveil unique features in each dataset.

How did you get involved with the Ocean Exploration Trust?

I applied and was accepted to a graduate program at the University of Rhode Island. My advisor is Adam Soule who introduced me to a variety of projects he was working on. One of these projects was in American Samoa and I'm excited to get out there and analyze data!

What other jobs led you to your current career?

My time as a research assistant and teaching assistant during my undergraduate allowed me to develop skills that have prepared me for graduate school.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Science in Marine and Coastal Sciences with a Minor in Chemistry - Western Washington University 2024. PSIA Level One Certificate.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy skiing, hiking, backpacking, fly fishing, reading, running, and chess.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

If you want to go to graduate school apply yourself in college, and find professors who want to mentor. They will provide you with guidance and support during your time in college.
