Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

I support and inspire teachers and students in Ocean Literacy and S.T.E.A.M. Creating meaningful programs, sharing opportunities, and collaborating with partners is part of my job. The most reward part is teachers and students taking advantage and appreciating the programs and opportunities.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

Making a difference in the community. Being able to serve and help teachers and students to appreciate our natural resources, and share why we need to take care of our environment, for future generations to come. I hope that more and more students are so inspired, that they become scientist and researchers, and return home to serve their community as well.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My co-workers throughout the years, for their encouragement and support. "Team work makes the dream work." My family, for their continuous love and support, which allowed me to grow and putting myself out there. Most importantly, God. "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." Genesis 2: 15. God intended humans to work and care for His creation, while glorifying Him. It is our duty to do just that.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

Most fascinating is learning new things, and then sharing it with teachers and students. Appreciate what OET does, and look forward to sharing their stories from a local lens/perspective, and tell it to our local communities.

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I've been working closely with OET for over a year supporting the American Samoa expeditions. In preparing for the expedition I've been collaborating with the Education and Outreach team on upcoming workshops, events, and opportunities for local sudetns.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I was a teacher for almost 10 years. Loved working with students and teachers. This is my calling. I am grateful I am able to support them in this capacity.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Education- University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa 2005; Special Education Certified

What are your hobbies?

I have lots of different interests: traveling, meeting new people, trying new things, hanging out with friends, watching movies, listening to music, and eating!

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

When an educational or career opportunity arises, take it. Putting yourself out there to learn and try new things, is the start of a journey to endless possibilities. Showing compassion, humility, and respect to your surrounding is pivotal. Serving your community is a must and an honor.

What excites me most is exploring and discovering new things in my own back yard!
