Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

I am most inspired by projects that support ocean research and contribute to solutions that inform policy and protect our marine ecosystems. One of my favorite projects that I have had the absolute pleasure of working on was my senior capstone, Project Poppy, where my interdisciplinary team and I partnered with Clearbot to help their mission of collecting marine litter autonomously. Hoping to contribute meaningfully in ocean science, conservation, and engineering, I am currently working towards pursuing graduate school and building my skills in marine robotics.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

My initial interest in marine robotics came from the realization that I could bridge my passion and love for the ocean with my robotics engineering background. I was introduced to the world of marine robotics while working as a kayaking guide out of the Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing. There, I learned about all the kinds of cool research the nearby Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) was doing with their remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). This inspired me to participate in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) ROV Competition through my school’s robotics team, Slugbotics! It felt incredibly rewarding to apply the engineering skills I learned in an aquatic environment and I definitely felt much more encouraged to pursue my interest in this field.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

The light that shines from deep within me is rooted in the love poured into me by my family, my ancestors, my friends, and my community. I am inspired by all the people I love in my life; I truly feel so blessed and grateful to the people I call home, whose support lifts me up and carries me far. One of the most influential and encouraging figures in my life is my grandpa whose ceaseless curiosity and wonder shines through me always.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

What I find most fascinating about working in marine robotics is how it helps scientists explore and better understand parts of the ocean that are still largely undiscovered. I find it super interesting learning about how these different observational tools and instruments work alongside researchers to uncover new and relevant information about these environments and species. Recently, I have realized that scientific inquiry is often limited by the reach of our current technology, which dictates the very questions we are able to ask. I am incredibly excited to collaborate with fellow experts to develop the next generation of tools that will empower future quests into the unknown!

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I have been watching clips from the Nautilus livestreams for as long as I can remember, so it feels like a dream come true to now participate in an expedition with the Ocean Exploration Trust! When I saw that there was an ROV engineering role, I knew I had to apply, as it felt exactly aligned with what I have been working towards. After pushing past some initial self doubt, I submitted my application. Now, I am beyond stoked and incredibly grateful to join this brilliant team of scientists and engineers to do the exact work I am most passionate about.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

My favorite jobs that I have ever had were when I was working as a kayaking guide and as a California State Parks employee during my undergraduate years. That time spent outdoors perfectly balanced my rigorous engineering coursework. Even though I was on the clock, it felt more like recharging by the water and having fun with friends by the dock! Finding that balance has been so important; it has fueled my dream of a career that blends my love for the ocean and nature with a passion for tinkering and building. I am so excited to do work that is deeply meaningful while still having fun.
I feel incredibly grateful for the experiences that have led me to this point. Last year, I went on my first research trip to Alaska on the R/V Atlantis as part of the STEMSEAS program, where I felt that this path that I had been conceptualizing is tangible, something I can actually pursue. Being surrounded by such a diverse and passionate group of people gave me a sense of belonging I had never felt before. It truly solidified that this is where I am meant to be.

What are your degrees and certifications?

BS in Robotics Engineering — University of California, Santa Cruz (2024)
NAUI Open Water SCUBA Certification (2019)

What are your hobbies?

I love crocheting fun hats and accessories; I’ve just learned how to knit, which has been so fun for making little matching pieces for my friends and myself! I love live music and have been having a nice time playing little tunes on my guitar and ukulele. Though I love my cozy activities, I always look forward to the adventures I go on in the great outdoors of course! In my free time you can most always find me frolicking in the forest or playing down by the water. Most of all, I love hanging out with my friends and family, going out to explore new places to eat, and spending time enjoying each other's company!

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

My best advice comes from one of my mentors, which is that "only you can create your own reality." To me, that means not letting other people tell you who you can or cannot be, what you can or cannot do. It means believing in yourself, cheering yourself on like you cheer others on, and remembering that life is all about learning and growing. Nobody knows everything and that’s all part of the fun: asking questions and figuring it out as you go!

What excites me most is just getting to do the darn thing I have always dreamt of, standing at the edge of discovery, not knowing what this exploration mission will reveal, it is thrilling!
