Hagen is a Research Scientist at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, PA; tenured since 1995. He is also the Director of the Professional Master's Course in Robotics in the School of Computer Science at RI in CMU. Hagen has more than 10 patents to his name, several of them commercially licensed to robotics companies. He started (1999), ran and sold (2007) a very successful high-technology robotics company (Automatika, Inc.) and has always had a love of the sea and the technology needed to explore it!

Hagen graduated with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Tech in 1984 and an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Oceanographic Engineering 1990 from MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
