Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

My research focuses on the deep-sea communities that live on seamounts (mountains under the sea) to understand their biology and ecology. Specifically, I focus on the different coral species that occur within the deep-sea and how the benthic environment may influence the different kinds of species there.  The deep-sea is integral to the health of our planet, and therefore I hope to help improve our understanding of deep-sea ecosystems and help protect them from human activities and climate change. I am broadly interested in understanding how and why these different benthic communities form and how seamount communities differ from each other. To understand this, I also investigate the reproductive biology of deep-sea corals to understand their dispersal capabilities and therefore the potential connectivity between different populations within the deep-sea. My overall aim is to study and understand the connectivity of different benthic communities as well as how different deep-sea populations are connected. To carry out this work, I have relied on sampling by ROV's and seafloor mapping using submersibles and automated underwater vehicles. 

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I started out in Marine Biology because I had a fascination with how our oceans influence our planet. At the University of Plymouth, I was exposed to the adaptive capabilities of coastal and intertidal marine animals. This then meant I developed a desire to understand the complexity of marine organisms and their ability to adapt to the most extreme environments on Earth. This led me to have a fascination with the biology and physiology of the organisms that live in our oceans. When coming into Graduate school, I developed an interest in the deep-sea that went beyond biology to how an organism interacts with the environment. The creatures that live in the deep-sea are living in some of the most extreme environments on Earth, yet they have developed ways to adapt and survive. There is so much to learn and discover in the deepest parts of our oceans!

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
My Marine Biology camp counselors between the ages of 13-16. This was my first exposure to the field of marine biology beyond what I had seen on television. These individuals were role models for me to see that I could do this career as long as I worked hard in school! My parents were also extremely encouraging and supportive of me pursuing this career. 

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

The most fascinating element of my work is getting to see all of the unique corals and their communities. I get to see how different species interact with each other and ask questions as to why they might exhibit these behaviors.

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I have participated as a Scientist Ashore for some previous expeditions. My PhD advisor, Dr. Fanny Girard, is trialing her new lander, so I have the opportunity to help deploy it and participate in this cruise!

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I have had many amazing opportunities that eventually led me to the position I am in today. During my undergraduate degree, I was an intern at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, which allowed me to develop skills as well as get to look after a variety of marine creatures. During this time, I gained experience in propagating shallow water corals, which meant that I gained experience in the biology and physiology of corals. After working in the industry for a year, I knew I wanted to go back and continue a career in academia. I then applied to graduate school.

What are your hobbies?

I love to surf, run, cycle, and swim! I am very active but also enjoy time sitting on the beach to read a book. 

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Be determined, and if this is something you want to pursue, know that it is possible! Be interested, ask questions, and remain curious. If there is someone who's work you are really interested, or a scientist that inspires you, do not be afraid to reach out to them. You never know where a simple conversation could lead.
