Ellen Kappel (Berman) is President of Geosciences Professional Services, incorporated in Maryland in 1999. Part of her work is as editor of Oceanography magazine. Geo Prose also edits and designs science plans, brochures, and other high-level materials for the geoscience community. Prior to Geo Prose, Ellen worked for 12 years at Joint Oceanographic Institutions as a manager for the international Ocean Drilling Program. Her graduate and postdoctoral work was on mid-ocean ridge tectonics, using side-scan sonar, deep-sea photography, and submersible observations.

Ellen Kappel (Berman) graduated Cornell University in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in geology. Ellen completed her PhD in 1985 in marine geology and geophysics from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.

"I am very excited about being on board a ship after a roughly 25-year hiatus. I've been on more than a dozen oceanographic cruises, but in the "old days." I am thrilled to be able to work with and see first hand all of the new underwater and communications technologies. I am also excited about communicating with young people about the science."
