Derek Ung
Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?
I improve and maintain lab autonomous vehicles; principally the waveglider and WAM-V. I do design work using computer aided design software and overall sensor integration on various platforms.
What sparked your initial interest in your career?
I enjoy the hands-on nature of fixing and creating, engineering is a pathway to being able to do both more effectively and methodically.
Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
I had great mentors in highschool who taught us how to develop robotics systems for FIRST robotics.
What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?
Knowing that I performed a job well done, whether a months-long project or a two-day effort, is deeply satisfying.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
I've worked as an engineer in 2-5 person companies and worked as an engineer in the US Navy

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?
Finances notwithstanding, find your own projects. Try to not let what you currently do dictate your career path.
