Christian Rivera Vega

Describe your work onboard the ship. What are your responsibilities?

On board the vessel, I am responsible for supporting the daily operations of the ship by performing maintenance, safety, and watchkeeping duties. My responsibilities include inspecting many different types of equipment. As a ship engineer, I operate and maintain a vessel's propulsion system, generators, pumps, and other machinery, while also recording information in an engineering log and keeping an inventory of mechanical parts and supplies.  

What part of your work do you like the most?

The part of my work I enjoy most is the opportunity to travel, experience different places, meet new people, and make friends.

What other jobs led you to your current career?         

I took this job to gain experience working on different types of vessels in my career. An exploration vessel provides a great opportunity to learn new skills, expand my knowledge, and work in a unique maritime environment supporting interesting science.

What are your hobbies?        

My hobbies include running, going to the gym, playing baseball, and fishing with my friends. I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?        

My advice would be to stay motivated, work hard, and always be willing to learn from your peers!

What sparked your initial interest in a career working at sea?                

I have always enjoyed traveling and experiencing new places, and a maritime career provides the opportunity to do that while building valuable skills and gaining professional experience.
