Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I specialize in seafloor mapping using multibeam and single beam sonar. I have mostly been involved in projects on research vessels acquiring high-resolution bathymetric data of previously unexplored areas including fracture zones, seamounts and plateaus. As an independent contractor, I have the flexibility to choose my projects, allowing me to strike a balance between time at sea and time at home.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

At the age of 15 I went on a week-long sailing trip on a historic tall ship, where we used only traditional navigation methods -without electronics- to sail around UK waters. This sparked my interest in all things nautical, including charting and exploration. This ultimately inspired me to pursue hydrography as career path, completing a Bachelor’s degree in Ocean Science and a post graduate certificate in Ocean Mapping

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My fellow students at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping, who came from all walks of life and shared the same passion for hydrographic survey.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

I find it endlessly fascinating when we compare our high resolution bathymetric maps with previously available satellite derived maps. The level of scientific innovation and technology that has led us here is truly impressive.

How did you get involved with the Ocean Exploration Trust?

I am fortunate to have a good network of people who are dedicated to ocean exploration and ocean science and I was able to organize my first cruise on board the Nautilus through a friend and colleague who I have known since graduate school.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I was introduced to hydrography and underwater acoustics during my bachelor degree, but I didn’t seriously pursue it until much later. I have held many ocean going positions aboard boats, including work with non-profits, worldwide vessel deliveries and even fishing charter operations. While they were not directly related to ocean mapping, all of these roles prepared me for life on board a ship working closely with interdisciplinary teams in dynamic and sometimes unpredictable conditions.

What are your degrees and certifications?

BSc (Hons) Ocean Science - University of Plymouth UK
Graduate Certificate in Ocean Mapping - Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrograpghic Center, University of New Hampshire

What are your hobbies?

Sailing, building things, time with my family.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

It’s ok to take your time to find your passion. Explore the world around you so that you have some perspective on why science matters.
