Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

After graduating from Macalester College last year, I have been working as the PostBac in the Geology department, assisting with classes, labs, and research. I am primarily interested in research relating to volcanology and geohazard analysis. As a part of my honor’s thesis, I studied the 1973 Eldfell eruption in Vestmanaeyjar (Iceland) by analysing the shape and size distribution of vesicles. These vesicles, formed by gas bubbles in the magma, can provide insights into the bubble processes that impact the eruption dynamics.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

Taking a geohazards class my freshman year of college introduced me to studying geology. My interest in geohazards and volcanology expanded as I took other classes, studied abroad in Iceland, and worked on my honor thesis research. Visiting the volcanic islands in Vestmannayjar in Iceland and the Galapagos sparked my interest to learn more about underwater volcanism because I am very interested in studying seamounts and island formation, physical volcanology, and the relevant geohazards.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My professor and advisor, Emily First, has inspired and supported me throughout my classes, research, and current position. I would not have pursued volcanology research without her encouragement!

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

My favorite part about studying geology is the way it has made me look at the world in a different way and notice different features in nature.

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

Through the SEIP Internship program when I was looking for opportunities to gain experience on a research vessel.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I have spent the last year working as the Geology PostBac at Macalester College, assisting with prepping classes and labs as well as contributing to a wide range of research and projects within the department. I have also worked as a wilderness trail counsellor, leading teenagers on canoeing trips with Camp Widjiwagan in Northern Minnesota and Canada. This experience has prepared me with a unique skill set that has helped me when working in the field and with problem solving in conducting research.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Arts in Geology with a minor in Environmental Studies – Macalester College 2025;
Wilderness First Responder

What are your hobbies?

I am a fan of any activity that includes spending time outside or fiber arts (knitting, sewing, crochet, etc.). I love going on backpacking and canoeing trips and bringing my craft projects along with me!

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Give every opportunity a shot, you never know where it will lead you to!
