Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?
As an undergraduate at Massachusetts Maritime Academy specializing in Marine Transportation, my studies focus on vessel operations, navigation, and maritime safety. Participating in this expedition allows me to bridge my classroom training with real-world oceanographic operations, getting firsthand experience how advanced research missions are coordinated and executed at sea.
What sparked your initial interest in your career?
My initial interest in this career path was sparked by meeting NOAA ship captains, mates, and officers supporting vital ocean research. Learning how professional mariners command advanced research vessels and seamlessly navigate complex operations in challenging environments made me realize I wanted to be part of that world.
Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
Some of the biggest influences on my career path have been the NOAA officers I’ve met and hearing firsthand about their work. Listening to their experiences on the bridge and learning about the operational complexities they manage day to day really solidified my desire to pursue Marine Transportation.
What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?
The most fascinating aspect of my studies is learning how to effectively manage an ever-changing marine environment. Mastering the ability to analyze real-time variables like shifting weather, sea states, and vessel traffic to make critical safety and navigational decisions is incredibly challenging and rewarding.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
Although I am still building my formal professional background, spending my life on and around the water sparked my initial fascination with the marine environment. This connection to the ocean is what ultimately drove me to study Marine Transportation.
What are your degrees and certifications?
I am currently a cadet attending the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, pursuing an undergraduate in Marine Transportation.
What are your hobbies?
In my free time, I love to spend time outdoors, whether it's surfing, hiking, or swimming. I also have a strong passion for any kind of art, especially playing music.
What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?
My advice would be to take the time to truly understand what you want out of your life and career, and let that vision drive you. The maritime industry requires a lot of dedication and time away from home, so having clear personal goals and passions is essential.
