Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I am a subsea robotics and marine support technician. I am the machinist for the University of Hawaiʻi Marine Center where I design, build, and repair all kinds of equipment in support of science. I also am an ROV pilot and technician for the ROV Luʻukai system operated by UH.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

Working as a marine engineer in the research fleet I found that I could be an asset to science parties when they had issues with their equipment.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

The machinist that gave me the opportunity to learn about these systems and gave me the tools to succeed in this career. He taught me all the basics and advanced techniques to design and machine precision parts.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

Every day is a new challenge sometimes I never know what problem will need to be solved on any given day!

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I started as a QMED Marine Engineer for the research fleet and saw a need to assist the scientists with their complex equipment when things went wrong.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Certificate of Marine Engineering Technology - Seattle Maritime Academy 2014

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include PC gaming, high-performance PC design and building, 3d modeling, 3d printing, laser etching, and small electronics projects. I also love to build with Legos!

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Never give up! Pursue your passions and always Listen! My life goal is to learn something new every day no matter how many times. You fail, keep trying.
I have a whole box full of broken tools and scrapped parts, just take a step back, refocus, and try again, don't let one mess-up discourage you.
