New River Middle School - Marine Science Magnet

Katherine O'Fallon is the Marine Science Magnet Coordinator at New River Middle School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Katherine has been the coordinator for the program for four years and prior that she was teaching marine science through grades 6-8. Katherine has been a integral part of growing the Marine Science Magnet Program over the past seven years of both teaching and coordinating. New River Middle School was recognized for its marine science program as a Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America. Prior to coming to Florida, Katherine was part of the Marine Education and Research department at the Curacao Seaquarium in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. 

Katherine O'Fallon graduated from Long Island University, Southampton College in 2002 with a degree in Marine Science: Biology and completed her master's degree in Science Education from Nova Southeastern University.

"I grew up in Minnesota, but middle school was the time when my interest in ocean exploration was sparked. My father will tell you it started from watching a television series, "SeaQuest DSV." At the end of each episode, Dr. Ballard would talk about the science concept that inspired the episode and from there I was hooked. I am very excited to be aboard the Nautilus and I hope this will be the "spark" for my students at New River Middle School."
